Hope is a trust and a desire for something to happen. Hope brings people together because it instills a feeling of expectation, knowing something good is coming. We all search for hope for something, because without hope there would be nothing but disappointment. Life is hard enough as it is and to have hope and be able to hold on to it is even harder, especially when very unexpected events occur in our lives.
As believers we have hope in Jesus. We have hope in the word of God. We have hope in Jesus fulfilling His promises to us. Especially when trials and tribulations come our way, we know and are steadfast on the characteristics of Jesus, of who He is. We have hope that He will always be there no matter what the circumstance.
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31
1. Jesus is Full of Compassion:
The compassion of man does not even compare to the compassion of Jesus. As humans we may see others who are hurting, broken or ill and want to lend a helping hand or try to reach out to show that we care, but typically only when it may be convenient for us. When I feel shame or less than, Jesus shows compassion over me in every way and that is all I need. When Jesus shows his compassion, it has no bounds, it is shown in ways of healing, of performing miracles and even when he is tired, frustrated or hit with life’s troubles.
“When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.”
2. Jesus Exudes Forgiveness:
No matter what any of us do because of his blood that was shed on the cross for us, our sins are forgiven, and we are wiped clean. Because he has forgiven us for anything we had done and anything we will do until we meet him face to face, we have the power within us to extend that same forgiveness to ourselves and to others who have hurt us. Even in the midst of being tortured and persecuted, Jesus told His Father in heaven to forgive them.
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
3. Jesus is Faithful:
Faith means believing in something unseen and being loyal to Jesus even when we do not feel Him at that moment. Jesus does all things through faith in God His father. Jesus shows his faithfulness with being loyal to us in every way possible. He will never leave or forsake those who serve him. Even in our lack of faith, He visits us over and over again with his never-ending faithfulness and his kind correction in order to call us back to his side. He shows us this trait for us to have and build our faith in Him.
Psalm 91:4, “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
4. Jesus is Our Salvation:
Jesus came down to earth to pay the ultimate price. He died on the cross so that we may live eternally with Him. In the process of his death and resurrection, he truly saved our lives and completely wiped us clean, made us a new creation with our identity rooted in His name. Jesus Christ is the only way that we have eternal salvation with our heavenly father. His ultimate sacrifice of letting himself be beaten and mocked brought us free will to choose the life we will live here on earth and where we will spend eternity. This is the hope that I hold on to daily, I don’t know about you.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17
5. Jesus Has Transformative Power
In order for us to be transformed from the inside out, we need Jesus’s power. He brings us to a place where all we need is to turn to Him for his guidance and help throughout life. He brings us to a point in our lives where like the layers of an onion, we start to see the pain, the hurt, the abuse, the lies and everything from the old life we lived so that we can run to Him to completely clear us and make us white as snow, shining ever so bright as a light to the rest of the world. Only He can transform and only if we allow him to.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
2 Corinthians 5:17
There are so many characteristics of Jesus that continuously breathe truth into my heart, soul and mind on a daily basis. I just listed a few here because they are the few that I repeat over and over to remind myself what Jesus has done for us and continues to do for us every single day. As a reminder that a day does not go by that these characteristics do not shine through and bring me hope and comfort knowing who He is and what He is capable of.
These days we need hope to hold on to, and Jesus is just that, our living hope. When the lies start to creep in or the devil tries to stir up anxiety or speaks ill into your identity, lets grab unto these truths of who Jesus is. Lets come back to God’s word and the very nature of our heavenly father because that is the only way we are able to keep moving with hope that our eternity will be spent in absolute bliss in His holy presence.
