My Spiritual and Mental Health Journey with COVID-19

We are officially in flu season. Now add COVID-19 into the mix and you’ve got a recipe for anxiety, fear and stress. The enemy of our souls tends to attack us with anxiety and fear when we’re feeling the most vulnerable. Can you think of a time where you felt vulnerable and exposed to spiritual attacks? I can think of many different scenarios – exhaustion, illnesses such as a cold, flu or COVID-19 – the devil attacks us the most in this state and tries to make us weary and hopeless by attacking our minds.

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

John 8:44

The enemy of our souls knows when we are weak, and he will try every single tactic to induce anxiety, fear, and mistrust in God.

Recently, I’ve been experiencing what I deserved above, due to the fact that I was tested positive for COVID-19. Also, I had to remain quarantined in my room, with very limited access to the outside world, for the next 14 days. My symptoms seem to be getting worse every day. It is in these moments where the devil has tried to attack me with his lies – and I’m sure you’ve experienced this as well.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

1 Peter 5:8-9

We have the power of God in us, we have the authority to say, God we trust you and devil flee from us, anxiety flee from us especially in these moments.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.”

Philippians 4:8

I have been finding different ways to free my mind while I am not feeling well physically and wanted to share so you can do the same if you find yourself feeling this way:

1. Run to God
This can be going to His word (the Bible) specifically, this can be doing a quick study and reflecting on it by journaling. Also, you can pray through your emotions and anxiety and lay them at Jesus’ feet. You can cry to Him about how you are feeling, all your symptoms. He truly is there to take them away and heal us. He is there to take away our anxieties.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you.”

1 Peter 5:7

2. Keep in Touch with Friends & Family
Its easy to close off when you don’t feel well. Isolation leads to feelings of loneliness. Reach out to loved ones. I am speaking from experience – knowing that you are not alone makes the world of difference. Read Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

3. Talk to Your Doctor
This will help keep your mind at ease regarding how you’re feeling physically and what your experiencing mentally. The doctor will be rational and talk you through home remedies and medications you can take to help soothe and make you better.

4. Meditation

Meditation has been a game changer for me and I hope would be for you too. Not just when were sick but anytime anxiety or negative thoughts try to take over. You can do this through the Abide app, YouTube, and various podcasts.

5. Breathing Exercises

When you practice deep breathing, you calm your mind down from spiraling.

6. Worship
There are so many benefits with including worship music into your day – this is especially true for times when you are sick or quarantined. Worshiping God helps us to fix our eyes on Jesus – regardless of our circumstances or feelings.

God never fails – he wins, he protects & he helps us. When we worship, we bring own the atmosphere of heaven into our hearts and circumstances.

7. Essential Oils
Essential oils have numerous wellness benefits that are far too much to count. Essential oils are healthy and help you feel grounded as well as help keep your space smelling good and in turn make you feel good. There are several oils that could help, thieves is also a good one that helps with immunity and lavender helps me to relax and decompress from the stresses of life.

8. Take Vitamins
Vitamins just help. Vitamin D, C, Zinc, Magnesium, Turmeric, Super Lysine. These are just a list of some the ones I am taking as Im sick and have been taking for a long time. Vitamins are proven to help anxiety, to help keep our immunity fighting for us.

9. Watch TV
Take a break and tune out. Just relax and put on your favorite movie or tv show – some of my favorites recently are The Office, New Girl, The Crown, reruns of Grey’s Anatomy, Dawson’s Creek and really any good hallmark Christmas movies, which are all out now. This will just get your mind off things and will help relax your mind as well.

We must remember who God is and how He uses everything for our good. We must remember that God sometimes wants to get us in isolation to teach us more about Him and what he is doing in our lives. I am learning that through isolation, I have no where to run but to Him, I have nothing to do but to worship Him, to read His word, to cry out to Him every time an anxious thought enters my mind.

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. …

Ephesians 6:11-17

So whether you are sick, you have not been feeling your best, you have COVID-19, or just have anxiety and struggle with negative thoughts – just remember these tips to keep your mind healthy when you are not feeling so good. God always has us in the palm of His hand and will never leave us.
